A neck lift removes fat and tightens the skin to recreate lost definition by neatly pulling the skin upwards into the angle between the chin and neck. A standard surgical neck lift commonly uses skin excision and liposuction to rejuvenate the chin and jawline and eliminate the ‘turkey neck’ many patients complain about.
Am I a suitable candidate for a neck lift?
If you lack definition in the chin and neckline, liposuction can produce dramatic results. If you also have a double chin or a ‘turkey neck’, skin excision can be combined to address this problem area. It should be noted that a neck lift rarely sits in isolation. It is common to associate problems with the neck to the presence of jowls in the jawline. In such cases, it is usual to incorporate a lower facelift to get the best, most harmonious result.
What happens during an isolated neck lift?
During a neck lift, an incision is made underneath the fold of the chin from which the skin is tightened or removed completely.
In most cases, the incision would begin in front of the ear and extend down and around the earlobe on both sides. The incisions made are discreetly hidden in the hairline. The skin is then removed and secured in place. This dual access allows for a much more precise procedure as there is better control of the neck.
Lastly, liposuction is often used for more detailed neck contouring to compliment the skin excision.
What should I expect after having a neck lift?
Mild bruising and a little discomfort is to be expected following surgery. This usually resolves in no more than three weeks and you can also expect to return to work after this time.
How long do the effects of surgery last?
The result of your neck lift will depend on the surgeons skill, the quality of your skin tone and degree of sun damage to the area. Your surgery can be maintained long into the future if you maintain a healthy weight and diligently apply a high SPF sunscreen to protect the skin.
